Top 10 Countries That Disappeared In The 20th Century

New nations seem to pop up with alarming regularity. At the start of the 20th century, there were only a few dozen independent sovereign states on the planet; today, there are nearly 200! Once a nation is established, they tend to stick around for awhile, so a nation disappearing is quite uncommon. It’s only occurred a handful of times in the last century. But when they do, they completely vanish off the face of the globe: government, flag, and all. Here then, in no particular order, are the top ten countries that had their moment in the sun but are, alas, no more.
10. East Germany, 1949-1990
Created from the Soviet controlled sector of Germany after the Second World War, East Germany was probably best known for its Wall and its tendency to shoot people who attempted to cross over it. Now, it’s one (over-reactionary) thing to shoot foreigners who are trying to enter your country illegally, but these were its own people!
Basically little more than a Soviet satellite state, the collapse of the notorious Wall and, with it, the demise of the old Soviet Union brought an end to this failed experiment in Communism, and it was integrated back into the rest of Germany in 1990. Because East Germany was so far behind the rest of Germany economically, however, its reintegration with the west almost bankrupted Germany. Today, however, things are swimming along nicely, thank you. 09 more countries after the break...

Moon Shaped Skyscrappers

K0rean Heerim Architects has tried to reinvent the skyscraper with their two projects in central Asian republic of Azerbaijan. The two skyscrapers will be built in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan with a view on the Caspian sea . One building is called Full Moon Bay the other is Crescent and Caspian Plus. The two are going to be built on both side of the bay, acting as gateway markers. So far the pictures look fantastic and I really like the gateway markers idea.

Impressive Wooden House

Based in New York City and Newport Beach, California, M. Elle Design is a mother-daughter team that strives to combine understated elegance and comfort. The team is comprised of Mary Lynn Turner, a Southern California-based Interior Designers for over 30 years, and her daughters Marie and Emily Turner. With an impressive design portfolio, it is easy to see how the designer’s have made Elle Decor’s 5 to watch list.

This stunning home in the mountains is both warm and cozy, situated amidst conifer trees like a dream. This home features an understated elegance with its wood cladding, aged wooden beams and stone trimmings. For most, gray is a color that is typically not popular to immerse your surroundings in, but the way it has been used here is exceptional. The designer’s like to blend contemporary and old-world to create timeless casual chic. It seems they have blended these styles to perfection in this home.

The house in Melides, Portugal

The house in Melides, Portugal designed by Pedro Reis represents the desire for a holiday house as a getaway from the bustle of a big city. Two volumes intersect, a modern white glazed rectangle with public areas above, and a lower volume clad with earth colored concrete with private rooms below.

To leave in his area means “find a place”within the meaning of “a strong geometric footprint”, hit by two volumes out of date in the form of a “cross. ” The aim of this dialectical strategy to not only reduce the “scale and presence” of construction, but also “split” the program in two areas, a more “exuberant ” and exposed and a more “intimate” and contained. If the top light volume recalls the image from bringing modern house with large glazed areas open to the scenic landscape, the lower volume “anchored”, covered with layers of earth-colored concrete, pre-fabricated in situ, sits on the floor providing support and stability to the house.
